Villainous Musings: Thoughts on Hibike! Euphonium’s episode 8 (SPOILERS)

Euphonium Blog 1
Hello to all who may listen. I will spare you peons my rich and powerful laughter at your expense, as any villain worth his salt knows only to grandstand whenever there is a crowd present. And unfortunately, whatever crowd I might have had was long since lost due to my laziness extensive planing to rule the world by means of a corn field in Nebraska (*malevolent cackling*)! No matter, I will carry on regardless: people will pay attention when they see the aftermath of my devices. As for today’s dastardly deed, we will talk of the newest show in line to be described as “K-ON with X”, Trumpet Girls Hibike! Euphonium (mwahahaha)!

Specifically, I am going to give my general thoughts on the most recent episode in the still airing series. What I mean by a “Musing” in this case is that both here and anywhere else I put the title of “Villainous Musings” I will be talking about a subject within general geekery that I deem to be fairly narrow in focus. In this case (more…)

A Word From Drawingirl91 (a Re-Post)

DrawingGirl's Yui Avatar

Hello readers (yes Mr. Amoeba, I am talking to you). Due to both my own like of the article and some outside urging, I wanted to call attention to this article for anyone who happens to be paying attention. This point of view may be familiar to anyone who has frequented people who are well versed in dealing with the Anti-Moe Brigade, but I feel that this article is particularly poignant, because it is from the female perspective.

Too often when we hear from the female perspective on subjects geeky, it is from the feminist (specifically sex-negative feminism) or social justice perspective. There is often rhetoric about things catering to Males as the default, or how the material within these mediums repels Women who might be interested. Well here we have, straight from the horse’s mouth, that this argument presented to us by the social justice types is not always the truth. When looked from this background, this article is very poignant.

Anyway enough of my rambling, on with Drawingirl’s article!

Villainous Thoughts: A Look at Touhou 13.5 – Hopeless Masquerade

Touhou 13.5 Title Screen blog pic

I suppose I should make good on my promise of bringing some gaming related content into this waste of bandwidth I lovingly call a blog, and I figured the recent release of the newest official Touhou game (the demo at least) at Comiket 83 would do just the trick.

Ai Mai Mi and Visuals in Current Anime

Christmas has passed and the once New Year is now the current 2013, meaning that we have a whole new year of Anime upon is which is only just beginning (and, you know, one more year toward working to our goals in life, time with friends and family and all that jazz). 2012 ended on a rather positive note as far as Anime is concerned, with the airing of Kokoro Connect’s Michi Random arc and Nekomonogatari Kuro (which technically was aired on New Years eve but was subbed later and watched by me a day or 2 into 2013 itself). Both of which were excellent continuations (well, not Nekomono in a chronological sense) to equally excellent series which I love dearly. Whether it be Kokoro’s wonderful characters and excellent drama or Monogatari’s exceptional dialogue and fantastic visuals, both in my opinion are an excellent example of the power of Anime and Animation in general as an artistic medium, just as much so as the 90’s Batman cartoon or a Miyazaki movie. And while the Monogatari series demonstrates it far more strongly, it is fair to say that the good Anime of today both looks good and has good content. Even the not so great modern day Anime still often looks good. I was not fond of Hanasaku Iroha or Guilty Crown for instance, but I can’t knock their visuals. It’s very rare nowadays that I take any major issue with visuals in Modern Anime. With the advent of HD it’s become par for the course, almost expected to have good visuals. This is pretty critical when it comes to the major character love that is one of the defining characteristics of the Japanese Otaku, the predominant buyers of the product of Anime. So… what happens when a Current Anime can’t even pass that first criteria?

The Villain’s Choice: My Winter 2013 Watchlist

An old season ends, as another starts anew. This Fall 2012 season has been, to me at least, a nicely varied one indeed. We have had series that have started strong but waned as they strode forward (Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun), series that were a little slow on the start but became great as they went forward (Girls und Panzer), shows that are pretty much just boring with a few upturns (Little Busters), and shows that were just all around wonderful surprises (Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo). Concerning carryovers, for me it would be the wildly popular Sword Art Online, which also started slow but got more interesting as it went along, managing to convince me to read the light novel and gave me my recommended dose of fight scenes. We also had Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai which was, if nothing else, an “interesting” experience. I am however, waiting out on giving my full opinions on the series until this season actually concludes. Chuunibyou needs a post dedicated just to it to fully encapsulate my opinions on it.

Anyway, as this season is almost over, it is time once again to decide what shows will be taking up most of my time and keeping me away from doing things which should be far more important to me. Quite a few shows I’m watching are double cour, so I am intentionally keeping my watchlist low (hey, I need to keep some semblance of life left, especially now that I am just getting into things like League of Legends and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I am willingly corrupting my mortal soul more and more by the day, and I am loving every second of it. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA… *ehem*)

Anyway, yet another aside before I begin, you may have noticed that I titled this post with “The Villain’s Choice.” I plan to use that title for any list-type of post, whether it be a countdown or just an unordered list, in the future.

I will list the new shows first, and the carry-overs second. Also I tend not to watch the PVs of the New Anime and go only by the image and the Moetron descriptions, because I like going in fresh (at least when it comes to new shows). I also will not list OVAs and Movies because it usually takes me forever to get to either one. So without any further wasting of precious time, onwards we go!

Welcome!… I Guess…

Hello to all those whom might be concerned (which would be zero right now but hey, it’s not the first time I’ve preached to an empty church).

As you can probably tell from the image of Okuu on top and loli-Ritsu in the back (whom I so desperately want to hug and cuddle amongst other things) this blogspace will be inhabited by things of, shall we say, an Otaku-ish nature. One might expect to hear viewpoints, quite possibly, from the perspective of a geeky Otaku. One could even look out for things in line with… Okay, I’ll stop now.
